What is Black Tourmaline? Meaning and History

 Black Tourmaline (Schorl)

Although Tourmaline comes in many colourful varieties and some rare and very expensive, Black Tourmaline (sometimes known also as Schorl) is one of the most popular stones, that is used for spiritual purposes. Tourmaline is formed in Pegmatites, this is a void deep underground the surface of the earth. This void is filled with molten material that is rich in minerals, when this liquid begins to cool Tourmaline is formed. Brazil produces large tourmaline crystals some are several pounds in weight, but it is also found in many different places. The best specimens of Black Tourmaline are considered to be from Brazil, Africa, Pakistan and Maine.

Properties and uses of Tourmaline

This stone is ideal for those that work in challenging work places,  or find themselves in hectic environments, offering physic protection from these places of challenging nature and negative energy. It has the ability to transmute and purify negative energy turning into into usable energy.

We all know that we can encounter people with negative energy  or a situation that emanates "bad vibes". We can sometimes project these negative energies from ourselves, this is why it is important for those that find these statements familiar. Black Tourmaline acts to protect an individuals energy field against entities, attachments and debris. You could say that Tourmaline is a Negative energy black hole pulling negative energies from you and your surroundings and clearing all that disharmony. In a state of high purification one could aim to elevate the consciousness through meditation.

Etheric purification is another use for tourmaline, putting tourmaline in the pillow case, in the pocket or holding it during meditation, can provide cleansing for the auric field and all of the dimensions of the etheric body. This can even echo down to the physical form. We recommend using tourmaline for purging ideas of unworthiness, anger anxieties and general negative thoughts.

Black tourmaline is a premier grounding stone and one of the most effective for establishing a grounded circuit with the earths energetic field. Grounding circuits are increasingly important as we strive to adjust to earths shifting electromagnetic field. If one is not grounded and not in tune with the planetary energy at the times that these shifts occur, increased feelings of stress and negativity can be common.

The History of Schorl

The early history of what we know as "Schorl" dates back to around the year 1400. The village that is now known as Zschorlau (in Saxony, Germany) was at this time named "Schorl". This village was close to a tin mine where large amounts of Black Tourmaline was found. The earliest detailed description of this stone was written by Johannes Mathesius (1504 — 1565) in 1562 under the title Sarepta oder Bergpostill. The name had many different derivatives until about 1800, when the name Schorl, became the widely used name in the German-speaking areas. In England and the English Language the names Shorl and Shirl were used in the 1700's for schorl.
